Eli M.: Over the last two weeks I've read The Hate U Give (by Angie Thomas). In this book the main character’s name is Starr. She changes a lot during the course of the events that take place in the book. In the beginning she has two lives, one at home in her neighborhood Garden Heights, and one at her school. She keeps them separate. She keeps her two lives separate because she lives in a poor black neighborhood but she goes to a school with mainly white rich kids. When her friend Khalil is shot by the police, she doesn't tell either set of friends that she was there when it happened. Even when her friends at school ask her if Khalil was her friend, she denies it. Starr is scared for many reasons. Friends in the neighborhood want her to speak out about the injustice. Her friends at school are taking the side of the cop and assuming Khalil was a “thug”. When a friend from Garden Heights figures out that Starr was with Khalil when he was killed, she pressures Starr to speak out instead of letting the officer look like the victim. During the rest of the book Starr’s two worlds collide, and she also speaks out publicly about what happened and the injustice of the situation. Starr overcomes her fears over the course of this book, and I highly recommend reading it. |
