Ethan: I read The Everything Music Theory Book (by Marc Schonbrun) this summer. While reading about transpositions, i realized when doubling instruments in music production it sometimes makes more sense to double a fifth or fourth lower rather than an octave lower. When you lower an instrument as much as an octave sometimes it can get sort of messed up and quiet. Usually a fifth or fourth lower doesn't mess it up and it doesn't get much quieter. Also, sometimes doubling with a fifth or fourth adds more harmony and texture to the instrument than an octave. |
