Reese: In Liar and Spy (by Rebecca Stead), the book mainly takes place in an apartment building. The setting makes a difference to the action because the mystery unfolds at the apartment. Georges and Safer thought that an evil man, named Mr. X, lived in their building. Mr. X always had two big suitcases and carried his suitcases in and out of the building. Mr. X lived right above Georges’ apartment. The boys put a gum wrapper in Mr.X’s door to tell if he was home. The boys broke into Mr.X.’s apartment three times because they wanted to know why he carried these big suitcases. On the third time, Georges went back to his apartment to look out for Mr. X. Meanwhile, Safer searched Mr. X’s apartment for something that could be unlocked with a golden key that was found in Mr. X’s laundry. While Safer was in the apartment, Mr. X came home. Georges ran to the elevator to stall him while Safer got out of his apartment. When Safer makes it back to his apartment, he tells Georges that it was all a joke. Mr. X was not evil, and he was playing a joke on Georges the whole time. If this was not in an apartment building and set in a neighborhood, it would be a lot harder to break in, break out, or be a lookout. |
