Stella: In The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly, Calpurnia Tate is a twelve year old girl living in the early 1900's. She has a love for animals and wants to be a vet but her parents don't think she should go to college. She has six other brothers and one of them, Travis, is a year younger than her and likes animals too. One of the people they know in the village had puppies that were half coyote. The people that they know got rid of the puppies, but later Calpurnia and Travis found one that was beaten up. I would have fed him and taken care of him just like she did. They secretly brought food to him, but I probably wouldn't have kept it secret for long. I also would have helped Travis try to convince my parents to keep him because he ended up being a good hunting dog in the end. Calpurnia and Travis were walking in the woods when she and Travis found an armadillo. Travis wanted to keep it and Calpurnia eventually said yes. But I probably would have had Travis leave it because it isn't even partly domesticated and most wildlife should be kept in the wild if it's not hurt or anything. Travis kept it in a cage in their barn for a while until Calpurnia found out that armadillos can carry diseases. Then Travis washed his hands fifty times and they let the armadillo go. Most of the time I agreed with her choices, but some of the time I would have made a different choice or been more considerate of other people or animals. |
